The Irazú Volcano is situated in Costa Rica’s Central mountain range, just a few kilometers from Cartago and a relatively short drive from San José. Ascend toward the summit through changing vegetation, from coffee plantations to high-elevation ferns, before reaching the massive crater and its green-hued lagoon surrounded by jagged rock. On a clear day, views may extend toward both the Atlantic and Pacific. After visiting the volcano, descend to historic Cartago and stop at the Virgin of the Angels Basilica, an important pilgrimage site known for its vaulted ceilings, stained glass, carvings, statues and other works of art.
